LAPD

People in the Police Academy Magnet Program know me as cadet Jaramillo. In freshman year, i was class leader of class 614. During sophomore year, i was a corporal and last semester, i used to be sergeant II. Now, I'm just a cadet. I lost my rank because i didn't feel like i was any different than the ordinary cadets so I really didn't try my best and i didn't give it my 100 percent. I felt like i was just wearing the rank on my uniform. People with rank basically did the same things that cadets do, except someone is yelling at you at least once a day saying you are doing something wrong. I admit, i wasn't ready to hold rank, or maybe i was, but we received no training what so ever. to top it all off, we once again got a new officer. Let me tell you something, every officer has a different style of instructing his cadets. so we were exposed to a new plan and were put to study new content that we have never seen before. Ok, so everybody knows that you need to be able to adapt to any changes that come through your way, but as i said, i may have not being ready to hold rank at the time so what did i do? i didn't adapt as fast as i had to and in return, i got stripped of my rank. it also doesn't help that the captain doesn't like you and that he uses something that is prohibited when you are holding rank: Favoritism. Well, i turned in my patches of sergeant II and didn't complain much. I was stripped of my rank, not de-ranked, i was not put on probation, which is necessary in order to strip someone or even de-rank.

  1. I am very confused after reading this blog entry. Were you ready to lead or not? If not why? Are leaders born or trained. Did you lack confidence in yourself? Does someone have to feel superior to others in order to hold rank?

  2. It wasn't if I was ready or not. It's that the people above me didn't train anyone and just sat back and watched how we did. I didn't see effort in them so I didn't put in mine. Leaders are not born, they are made. Which goes back to the first part of this comment.I do not lack confidence, but I did lack enthusiasm because I didn't see it in anyone else. In your last sentence, did you mean to put "Does someone need rank in order to feel superior to others"? And the answer is no. I believe that rank is to show the hard work you have done and to build a chain of command, because without it, everything wouldn't work.
